About Our Theater Experiences

Year Round Musical Theatre Classes

Our year-round Musical Theater Training program offers 3 tiers of classes for young performers to "catch the bug" of musical theater. These weekly classes are designed to teach the basics with an emphasis on teaching children to love performing and theater. Our musical theater classes are fondly called "Apple Seeds." This is where our performers gain experience and learn the basics (the Seeds - get it?) of musical theater performance. Starting at age 5, our program is designed to teach:

  1. Singing Basics - matching pitch, breath support, singing in a group.

  2. Physical Storytelling - using the body through dance, characterization, and coordination.

  3. Teamwork - working as part of a large ensemble.

  4. Listening and Following Direction - there is only one director in theater!

  5. Basic Rules and Language of Theater - backstage and onstage!

Apple Seeds I (5-6 year old performers!)
Our 5-6 year old performers are assigned characters to portray in a short musical play and perform their skills in two full performances. They often wear simple costume pieces, work with simple props, and play several games during their class time to encourage play and creativity within their assigned characters. Roles are assigned by the instructor based on participant interest and skills observed through theater games, choreography, singing, and reading.

Apple Seeds II (7-12 year old performers!)
Our 7-12 year old performers play featured roles in one-act musicals, appearing in most songs and dances in four full performances. They often wear specialty tailored costume pieces, detailed face paint make up, and are challenged with acting and character development. Theater games are used as warm ups and skill builders that directly impact learning and team building. Roles are assigned by the instructor based on participant interest and skills observed through theater games, choreography, singing, and reading.

Summer Camps (ages 4-15)
Summer Camps are offered in two tiers - for 4-6 year olds for a week long two hour a day camps, or for 7-15 year olds two weeks 3.5 hours a day! Camps are filled with skill building fun games, rehearsals, and playmaking. 4-6 year olds present their work in a ticket free in class showcase at the end of their camp week for friends and family. 7-15 year olds perform 3 fully staged productions at the Poison Apple Playhouse at end of their two week rehearsal process to the amazement of their audience! Roles are assigned by the instructor based on participant interest and skills observed through theater games, choreography, singing, and reading.

Advanced Apple Performers (10-15 year old performers!)

Differing from younger age groups in content and expectation, students who enroll in this class participate in rehearsals two days a week, an in-class audition (everyone is guaranteed a role in the show), and intense training in acting, script analysis, character development and performance technique!

Young Writer and Director’s Project (ages 8 and up)
This is the class to learn how theater is made! An experience for writers ages 10-20 to write an original play in the fall and see it produced in the spring! Young directors take the plays and bring them to life with young actors rehearsing in the spring towards the world premiere of these brand new shows! A theme is chosen every year for writers to create within, and directors and writers both research that theme to present fully realized productions to their actors and audience. Overseen by theater professionals, our students are never without support, but free to explore creatively. What are you waiting for? Let's make some theater!

Main Stage Productions

The artistic center of Poison Apple is our “Main Stage” productions. These are the largest productions of the year. Main Stage productions are audition only projects that include youth AND adults. Productions push the boundaries of storytelling through audience immersion, themed concessions, new staging styles in our versatile black box playhouse, and explored imagination in the 9-15 performances of these productions! Rehearsals are always in the evening for 2.5-4 hours 3-4 nights a week. We typically produce 3-4 of these large scale productions a year including, but not limited to: a drama, a comedy, a holiday musical, an original play by local playwright, an original musical, and a big summer “block buster” musical in August performed at the Lesher Center for the Arts.

Participation Fees: Vary for main stage productions for youth under 18 (between $200-$650).
Adults DO NOT pay participation fees, but are required to volunteer time towards the production outside of rehearsals.
Participation for all is through audition only, no roles are precast unless clearly noted on our website.
